October 11, 2021

Happy Thanksgiving Peacock Nation! We hope you all had a wonderful long weekend with family and friends. It’s a great time to pause and reflect on all you are grateful for! Here is what’s coming up this week.

New Information To Share

DPE Spirit Wear: We are excited to be offering the chance for students and parents to purchase DPE Spirit Wear from our online store. We have shirts, hoodies, crew necks, pants and masks available in both our original design as well as our new Indigenous logo. Please click here to check it out. The store is now open and will be closed on October 25th.

Noon Hour Music Club (Gr 6-7): Noon Hour Music Club will start this coming Tuesday (October 12). This club is designed for Gr 6 & 7 students who do not have Music this year. We will meet every Tuesday from 11:47 am to 12:20 pm. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Lee.

Fun Friday Music Performance: This year, we are excited to announce that we will have a mini-concert every Friday afternoon during lunchtime. Anyone can sign up and perform (even staff☺️). The sign-up sheet will be on our DPE Music Community Board. Come and enjoy the beautiful music performed by our own DPE family members!

Upcoming Parent – Teacher Interviews: Across the Langley School District, elementary school students are dismissed one hour early to on October 20th & October 21st to allow for Parent-Teacher Interviews. At Dorothy Peacock, we switched to Student Inclusive Conferences instead of report cards. These will occur during the weeks of November 22nd – December 3rd. Given this, we ARE NOT REQUIRING all families to come for an interview on the October 20th & 21st dates. Teachers will reach out to families they feel they need to have a meeting with and, as always, families are welcome to set up a conversation with the teacher. Please email the teacher directly if you want to meet. For those interviews that are happening, the schedule will be as follows:

  • Wednesday October 20th – 2:30 – 6:30
  • Thursday October 21st – 2:30 – 4:30

Upcoming FSA: In the upcoming week, our grade 4 and 7 students will be participating in the Foundational Skills Assessment (FSA). This information is most useful at the school level as we use it to set goals in the areas of literacy and numeracy. We strive to have all our students complete the assessment in an environment that is low in stress and anxiety to ensure the most accurate results. If for any reason you wish to not have your child participate, an email must be sent directly to Mr Davids (sdavids@sd35.bc.ca) with your educational reasons for exemption. As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Halloween Costumes: As Halloween is on a Sunday this year, we’ll be having our celebrations on Friday October 29th. Students are encouraged to dress up for our parade. A reminder that students are not permitted to bring weapons of any kind to school, even if it is part of their costume. Also, please ensure the costume is appropriate for an elementary school.

Contact Tracing Information: Schools in the District are continuing to assist the Fraser Health Authority in contact tracing and case management. We appreciate the ongoing cooperation from parents/guardians in this process. To help support our families, we are sharing resources from the BC Centre for Disease Control which outline the contact tracing process in schools. You can view the Contact Tracing Infographic here and Contact Tracing in Schools resource here.

Scholastic Book Fair- Call for Volunteers: We are building our Book Fair Team! The library learning commons is excited to host the Scholastic Book Fair on the week of October 18-22. The virtual sale (https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5162739) will be live from Monday October 18th-Friday October 22nd and products available in the book fair are available online. This provides a safe alternative for families to support the book fair remotely. All orders placed online will be consolidated, individually packaged, and shipped to the school free of charge where parents and students can pick up their orders with their order confirmation.

The in-person fair will be hosted during after school hours on the following dates:

Tuesday, October 19th 2:20-3pm for students with cash and staff.

Wednesday, October 20th 1:20-7pm to families.

Thursday, October 21st 1:20-4:30pm to families.

Every purchase earns valuable Book Fair Rewards towards new books for our students in the library learning commons.

Some safety measures for the in-person fair includes:

  • Mask wearing of staff, volunteers, and patrons.
  • Sanitizing station by entry/exit.
  • Monitoring capacity (10-11patrons) to encourage social distancing.
In addition, as with previous book fairs, patrons will need to put large personal items (ex. backpacks) at the designated area by the library’s entrance.

If you are interested in volunteering Wednesday October 20th or Thursday October 21st, please add your name to the following schedule:

Our book fair is possible with the support of volunteers and families. We appreciate the efforts in making the Book Fair run smoothly and safely this Fall 🙂. All book fair proceeds will go towards updating and expanding our book collection in the library learning commons.

Information From Last Week

Updated Mask Mandate: Please click here to see the latest information regarding the Public Health Officer’s updated mask mandate. This will now include all of our Kindergarten to Grade 7 students. Please be sure to send your child with a mask and help them learn how to wear it properly.

Absences/Lates: Please be sure that you call or email the school if your child is going to be absent or late. This will make things smoother for Mrs Lipp and avoid unnecessary call-outs to ensure kids are safe.

Updated Daily Health Check: Our District’s procedure is for all students to complete a daily health check at home prior to entering school and/or boarding a District bus. The Ministry of Education’s Daily Health Check poster has been updated to reflect new federal regulations regarding international travel. The symptoms listed remain the same. You can find the updated print version here. The updated version is being translated into multiple languages, which will be posted to the Ministry’s COVID-19 Safe Schools website here. Families can also continue to use the Ministry’s mobile app or online version here.

Programs of Choice – Registration Period is October 4 – October 20, 2021: Langley School District offers a rich diversity of programs that are designed to meet the specific needs and interests of students. Programs include Fine Arts, French Immersion, Fundamental, Langley Environmental Awareness Program (outdoor education), Montessori, U-Connect, and Career Education Programs (secondary). The registration period begins October 4, 2021 and ends October 20, 2021. For more information and instructions to register your child, visit our District website here and review our FAQ choice programs resource here.

DPE PAC News

We had our first PAC meeting this week. Thanks for all who were able to attend. We were able to pass our budget and proposed some fundraising activities for the year. Until Christmas, at least, PAC meetings will be hybrid with both virtual (via Zoom) and live attendance in the Library. Our next meeting is expected to be either November 10th of 18th.
We will be trying to get the school activities back to normal and that means bringing back the Hot Lunch. To do Hot Lunch we need 1-2 people with Food Safe qualifications in the school. If you are available to help one Friday a month and have Food Safe we are looking for your help. We already have one volunteer willing to take a Food Safe course and have funding to get a second volunteer trained if that interests you.
We are still looking for room parent volunteers for Divisions 3, 5, 8, 14 and 18 and will take others who want to double up to reduce the work load.
This year we are also looking to do a Purdy’s order, Neufeld’s Farm and the Readathon and are looking for volunteers who can give us a hand for 1-2 hours for each of those. Volunteers please send your information to @dpepacpresident@gmail.com and we will forward your names to the right people.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving
