June 21, 2020

WOW!!!! We are at the last week of school already. Feels like just yesterday we were welcoming everyone back in September. It has clearly been a year like no other and together as a community, we have weathered it all! Here is the information you need for the last week of the year.

New Information To Share

Happy Father’s Day: To all the Dads, Step Dads, Uncles, Grandpas and any man who has a positive influence on the lives of our kids … Happy Father’s Day. We hope you are enjoying an amazing day!

National Indigenous People’s Day: June 21st is National Indigenous People’s Day where we recognize the rich, diverse and unique culture and heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Indigenous peoples have lived here since time immemorial; today we honour and show respect for the rights that are inherent in this history. We celebrate the significant contributions Indigenous peoples have made to the social, cultural and economic prosperity of B.C. Click here for a great traditional opening from one of the Fort Langley Elementary students, drumming led by our very own DPE teacher Fern Gabriel – Sesmelot, and imagery from Aboriginal Education events throughout the District.

Congratulations Grade 7s: As we close the school year, for some of our students, they are ending their elementary journey and transitioning to high school. On Friday night we celebrated our Grade 7s with a Virtual Farewell Celebration! We have appreciated their leadership throughout this year and we want to wish them all the best as they begin the next stage of their educational journey at Walnut Grove Secondary and other schools.

Info For Last Week: As we outlined, students are attending only 1 day next week (see below for schedule). .

  • Monday June 22: Those students who have been scheduled to attend Mondays/Tuesdays will attend class
  • Tuesday June 23: Those students who have been scheduled to attend Thursdays/Fridays will attend class. Remote learning officially ends.
  • Wednesday June 24: ESW students only
  • Thursday June 25: ESW students only
  • Friday June 26: Staff Administration Day …. no students attend

Final Class Visit: Some of our students still have a few supplies in class, library books to return or want to say goodbye to their teachers and support staff. Teachers have emailed their classes to let families know what days they will be at school during the last week (June 22-25). The Wednesday and Thursday are the main days we have set aside for this as there are no classes in session.

Technology: If you borrowed a device for remote learning, please return it to the office as soon as possible. Don’t forget to bring the charging cord with it too.

Library Books: If you still have a book checked out from the library, please return it this week. There is a bin outside the front door.

Report Cards: As in the past, report cards will be available through the MyEdBC Parent Portal. If you click here, you can access the portal as well as reset your password if you have forgotten. These will be available on Thursday after 4:00pm.

IEP Reports: For the parents of students who have an IEP, you are now able to access the progress report through the MyEdBC Parent Portal. The instructions to do this are available if you click here.

Staffing Updates: As we begin our transition to a new school year, there are some changes to our staffing. And while we are still finalizing the 2020-2021 staff we wanted to take a moment to say thank you to those who will be moving to new opportunities in the fall. All the best.

Information From Last Week

2020-2021 School Supplies: As we head into next year, the school will be buying all necessary supplies for Primary students and charging parents a fee in the fall. This will allow maximum buying power while ensuring each child has what they need to support learning. Our intermediates will be a school supply list which can be purchased through School Start Up. An email will be coming shortly from Mrs. Lipp.

2020 Virtual Talent Show: In the past, our intermediate students have held a Talent Show in the spring. And while we were unable to have everyone together, we did want to share their amazing skills. Please click here to check out the 2020 Virtual Talent Show.

DPE PAC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
SEPTEMBER 16, 2020   6:30PM

Please join us at the DPE PAC AGM and elections in September, when we will be discussing & voting on funds allocation for the upcoming school year as well as voting in our PAC Executive & Committee Leads for 2020/21.

At this time we are now accepting nominations for executive & committee roles until Wednesday, September 16th at 6:35 PM. Any parent is welcome to put their name forward for a position. Most do not take up a lot of time per month and you are welcome to share some roles with another parent, if you desire.
The new executive positions will run from October 1st – June 30, 2021.

Our executive roles must be filled in order for our school to receive BC Gaming Grant funding (appx $20 per student) which goes a long way towards providing all the extras for our school such as field trips, technology upgrades, arts performances, etc. Without this funding we will have to cut back or require parents to pay out of pocket for these expenses.

If you would like to put your name forward for a position please email Kristi at dpepacpresident@gmail.com. One of our PAC team will get in touch with you to discuss further. Click here for a short description of each role as well as the proposed budget for 2020/21.

Thank you so much. Please have a safe and happy summer. We hope to see you September 16th.
